We are excited to announce that Monica Scholz, FNP-C, joined our Primary Care team at Amberwell Hiawatha on January 17th. Having provided care for patients from diverse backgrounds with a variety of health needs throughout her career, Monica has developed an appreciation for providing individualized, holistic care. She is particularly passionate about empowering her patients with ways to prevent disease and promote health so that they can achieve their highest quality of life. Monica provides compassionate, patient-centered care to patients of all ages, from newborns to geriatrics.
Monica chose Amberwell Hiawatha because it serves the community in which she grew up. “As a native of Troy, Kansas,” said Monica, “I am honored to be able to care for patients in and around the community where I was raised. I like that we serve a smaller community where I have more opportunities to build long-term relationships with my patients.”
Monica knew that she wanted to become a family nurse practitioner while she was an undergraduate in nursing school. “I was working alongside a nurse practitioner who was volunteering at the free clinic where I was completing a portion of my clinical rotation,” said Monica. “She was compassionate, competent, and precise in her practice. I was inquisitive and naïve and eagerly listened to every word she said. I was excited to become a registered nurse; however, after my experience at the clinic, I knew that I could not stop there. I completed my nursing program and decided to pursue becoming a family nurse practitioner.”
Providing patient-centered care is at the heart of Monica’s practice. “To me, patient-centered care is most achievable in a patient-provider relationship that is based on trust, shared decision making, and mutual respect,” said Monica. “I want my patients to feel comfortable enough to voice their values, preferences, and individual needs so that we can develop an evidence-based plan that is doable and aligns with their goals and ideals. I feel that patient-centric care is the key to helping the patient reach their health goals.”
Monica received her associate degree in nursing from Highland Community College in Highland, Kansas. She began her career in healthcare as a CNA, then a CMT, an LPN, and an RN. Her thirst for knowledge and desire to help people led her to earn a Master of Science in Nursing–Family Nurse Practitioner from Research College of Nursing in Kansas City, Missouri. During her time as a registered nurse, Monica spent several years serving the geriatric population in hospice care.
Monica lives in Denton, Kansas, with her husband, two teenaged sons, and one young daughter. In their free time, she and her family enjoy outdoor activities—camping, hiking, swimming, and spending time on her family’s farm.
