Kristy Selland, CNM, APRN

Kristy Selland, CNM, APRN, is a primary care and maternal care provider at Amberwell Hiawatha specializing in women’s health. Kristy began her career as a labor and delivery nurse in 2010 at Amberwell Hiawatha. She then completed her master’s degree in nurse-midwifery and served as an advanced practice provider in a women’s health clinic in St. Joseph, Missouri, for seven years, where she provided gynecological and obstetric care.

Kristy’s patients range from girls in their early teens to women throughout their lifespan. Her focus areas include well-woman care, birth control, gynecological issues, prenatal care, preconception care, fertility issues, and menopause care.

Kristy cares for patients who want to have their babies naturally, with no medication involved, as well as those who are induced or require interventions, and she assists during cesarean births.

On Choosing Amberwell…

Having grown up in a rural community in Kansas, Kristy is passionate about providing quality, accessible healthcare close to home. She believes that patients should not have to drive long distances to have access to the care they need. “The point of doing rural healthcare,” said Kristy, “is being able to take care of people where they live so that they are not driving over an hour and a half to try to get to appointments. Amberwell delivers quality healthcare close to home.”

On Caring for Patients…

Kristy values the personal relationships she develops with her patients. “Time with my patients is very important to me,” said Kristy. “I love being able to sit with them, spend time talking to them, and getting to know them. I have patients that I started seeing when they were in high school. Then, they go to college, get married, and I deliver their first baby. As the women get older and become menopausal, I can still take care of them. I can take care of their diabetes, their high blood pressure, and other chronic conditions, too. I love that consistency and keeping those relationships throughout the decades.”

On Choosing to Become a Midwife…

“I knew I wanted to be a midwife before I even went to nursing school,” said Kristy. “As a teenager, I had seen a midwife in Lawrence for medical care and loved her bedside manner. I loved how she approached healthcare and how she approached me and educated me. She was very open and honest with me. Then, I started asking her about her work and what her life was like as a midwife. My experience with her solidified my decision to become a midwife.”

About Kristy

Kristy and her husband live on a farm in Horton, Kansas, with their three school-aged children—two boys and a girl. They love the outdoors and being surrounded by animals on the farm. Her children are very active in sports, and Kristy loves coaching their soccer and tee-ball teams. They also participate in 4-H, where her oldest son shows cattle and horses.

In her free time, Kristy enjoys playing co-ed softball and rec volleyball. She also plays handbells in her church choir, is a member of her church council, and serves on the fair board for Brown County.
