Aggie Asher is retiring after thirty-three years of service at Amberwell Health. Aggie began working at Amberwell on August 14, 1989, as a social worker. She became the manager of social services in 1993 and has served in that role for the past thirty years.
“Amberwell has been my work family for thirty-three years,” said Aggie. “I have seen patients and families at their best and at their worst. I will never cease to be amazed at people’s capacity for love, courage, and endurance even in the most difficult circumstances.
“The staff, medical providers, leaders, board of directors, and endowment board at Amberwell are an incredible group of people that work hard for our community and surrounding communities to have the best medical care 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. I am proud to be a part of this incredible group and to know that we do make a difference in people’s lives.”
Throughout her career, Aggie has also had an impact on the lives of her colleagues at Amberwell and beyond. In 2019, she was nominated and chosen by a group of her peers to receive the Amberwell Health Leader of the Year Award, and in 2020, she was featured in Ingram’s Magazine as one of “50 Kansans You Should Know.”
Aggie has always been passionate about volunteering in the community and plans to continue in her retirement years. She currently serves on the board of directors for Atchison Community Health Clinic and The Guidance Center. She is also on the advisory board of the Atchison Senior Village. In the past, she has served on the board of directors of Maur Hill-Mount Academy and the development board of the Mount St. Scholastica Benedictine Sisters. At Amberwell, she helped develop the Patient Family Advisory Committee to improve the patient and family experience.
Fun fact: The Asher legacy at Amberwell is sixty years and counting! It began in 1963 with Aggie’s father-in-law, Jim Asher, who served as hospital administrator until 1991, and it will continue with Aggie’s son, Dr. Joe Asher, who has been a primary care physician at Amberwell since 2022.
In her retirement, Aggie plans to travel with her husband Martin and their family and friends. She also looks forward to enjoying more time with her grandchildren.
Congratulations, Aggie. You will be greatly missed by your patients, colleagues, and friends. We wish you all the best.
