A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove a person’s uterus. At Amberwell, we perform laparoscopic, abdominal, and vaginal hysterectomies. The choice of which approach to use depends on factors such as the reason for the hysterectomy, the size of the uterus, and the patient’s overall health. Dr. Warren sometimes performs this procedure along with a pelvic sentinel node biopsy.
What It Treats
A hysterectomy can help treat several health issues, including:
- Heavy or painful periods
- Uterine fibroids that cause pain or bleeding
- Uterine prolapse (when the uterus drops into the vagina)
- Endometriosis (when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus)
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Cancer of the uterus, cervix, or ovaries
Benefits of a Hysterectomy
Having a hysterectomy can offer relief from symptoms that affect your daily life. If cancer is present, a hysterectomy could save your life.
Benefits include:
- Ending heavy periods
- Relief from pelvic pain
- Prevention of certain types of cancer
- Improvement in quality of life
What to Expect
Surgical Setting: Inpatient
Before: Dr. Warren and his surgical team will explain the procedure and help you understand what to expect. You may undergo tests to prepare for surgery.
During: The surgery can be done in several ways, including through the abdomen or the vagina. The vast majority of our patients at Amberwell are treated using minimally invasive surgery. The method depends on your condition and health. You will be under general anesthesia. The surgery usually takes one to two hours.
After: Recovery varies by person and the type of surgery. The vast majority of hysterectomy patients stay overnight and are discharged the next morning. It’s normal to feel tired and have some pain, which can be managed with medication. Full recovery can take several weeks. Dr. Warren and his surgical team will be calling you the next day and in the days following your procedure to check in on your progress and make sure everything is going well.
