Sterilization
Laparoscopic tubal ligation, also referred to as getting your “tubes tied,” is a surgical procedure used as a permanent form of birth control. It involves blocking or sealing the fallopian tubes to prevent eggs from reaching the uterus for fertilization.
Laparoscopic Salpingectomy refers to the removal of both fallopian tubes in their entirety. The purpose of this procedure is the same as tubal ligation, permanent sterilization. This is an option increasingly chosen by patients to reduce future cancer risks. Both options can be discussed at your consultation to determine which is right for you.
What It Treats
These procedures are forms of contraception for those who are sure they don’t want to have children in the future. They are permanent methods to prevent pregnancy.
Benefits of Laparoscopic Tubal Ligation
This procedure offers a range of benefits designed to meet your health needs with efficiency and care.
Here are some key advantages:
- Effective and Permanent: It’s one of the most effective forms of birth control, with a very low chance of pregnancy after the procedure.
- Minimally Invasive: Uses small incisions, leading to quicker recovery compared to open surgery.
- Quick Recovery: Most patients return to normal activities within a few days.
- No Ongoing Costs: Unlike other forms of birth control, there are no ongoing costs or need to remember daily medications.
What to Expect
Procedure Setting: Outpatient
Before: You should discuss this decision with your primary care provider to make sure it’s the right choice for you. Pre-operative tests may be required.
During: The procedure is done under general anesthesia. Dr. Warren will make small incisions in your abdomen to access and seal or remove the fallopian tubes. The procedure typically takes about 30 minutes.
After: Recovery time is short; most patients go home the same day. You may experience some discomfort or pain, which can be managed with medication. Follow-up visits ensure proper healing.
