David Gerlach, MD

David Gerlach, MD, is a provider on the emergency care and inpatient care teams at Amberwell Atchison. Dr. Gerlach has spent his entire career in the ED. He combines his passion for medicine with a focus on compassionate patient care. After spending much of his career in places like Tennessee and Texas, Dr. Gerlach returned to Kansas, where he grew up and is grateful for the opportunity to care for a community that feels like home. 

On Choosing Amberwell Atchison  

“I grew up in Wichita, Kansas, so joining Amberwell felt like a homecoming,” said Dr. Gerlach. “After spending years working in places like Tennessee and Texas, I found myself missing the unique charm of Kansas—the winters, the wide-open views, and the welcoming communities. When I discovered Amberwell, it stood out as a place where I could make a meaningful contribution while reconnecting with the values and environment I grew up with. I’m excited to work alongside a dedicated team and serve a community that feels like home.”

On Becoming a Healthcare Provider  

Inspired by his parents—his father, a clinical microbiologist, and his mother, a nurse—Dr. Gerlach’s interest in healthcare began early. His curiosity about science grew into a passion for medicine during his studies at the University of Kansas. While he initially appreciated the structured nature of medicine, he soon realized that it also involves creativity, personal connection, and lifelong learning. “Medicine has turned out to be more dynamic and fulfilling than I ever imagined,” he reflects.  

On Patient Care  

Dr. Gerlach is committed to ensuring that every patient not only receives exceptional care but also feels genuinely cared for. His philosophy emphasizes listening to patients beyond their symptoms and diagnoses. He knows that coming to the emergency room is often one of the hardest moments in a person’s life, and he does his best to offer kindness and hope when patients need it most. 

About Dr. Gerlach  

Dr. Gerlach and his wife share their home with a cat who, like most cats, has her own unique personality. “She tolerates me,” he jokes, “but absolutely adores the kids when they’re around.” When he’s not caring for patients, Dr. Gerlach enjoys playing guitar and reading history and literature, especially the works of Jane Austin and Shakespeare. He also loves dancing, particularly Latin styles like merengue, bachata, and salsa.
