Jaymi Kearney, DNP, FNP-C, is a primary care provider at Amberwell Atchison. With several years of experience in healthcare, she is passionate about building strong relationships with her patients and providing comprehensive, patient-centered care.

On Choosing Amberwell Atchison

Jaymi has a lifelong connection to the Atchison area and to Amberwell Atchison. She grew up in Atchison County, where her grandmother was a first-grade teacher for many years at Atchison Catholic Elementary School (ACES), now known as St. Benedict’s Catholic School.

“I really feel that I belong here,” she says. “I’ve had so many life moments in this area—I got married here, had my two kids here, and grew in my career here.”

Having started her healthcare journey at Amberwell, she considers it her second home and values the opportunity to care for people she has known for years.

On Choosing to become a family nurse practitioner

Jaymi didn’t plan on a career in healthcare, but it turned out to be the perfect fit.

“Nursing kind of fell into my lap,” she said. Jaymi initially studied to be a hairdresser and became a licensed cosmetologist, but after hearing about a CNA program, she thought it sounded fun and decided to give it a try. “Nursing is something I never thought I’d be able to do, but once I started, it just felt right.”

Over the years, she worked her way from CNA to LPN, then RN, and finally, earned her doctorate to become a nurse practitioner.

On Patient Experience

Jaymi believes in treating the whole person, not just their symptoms. “Sometimes we focus on one issue—diabetes, hypertension—but it’s important to see the bigger picture,” she said.

Her background as a nurse gives her a unique approach to patient care as a primary care provider. She values the relationships she has built over the years and the trust her patients place in her.

“Some of my patients have been with me from the very beginning,” she said. They’ve watched me grow in my career, and it’s really special to have that connection.”

Her ability to pick up on subtle cues—like body language and facial expressions—allows her to provide compassionate and attentive care. “As a nurse, you learn to pay attention to the little things that make a big difference in how someone feels and what they need.”

Outside of work, Jaymi enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time with her family. She and her husband have visited Australia twice and plan to return in the future. Together with their two children, they love trips to the beach, camping, and staying active in sports.

Jaymi is also involved in community activities, participating in Amberwell’s community health fairs, various community events, and local parades. She values being a part of the community both professionally and personally.
