Tyler Darland, MD

Dr. Tyler Darland is a full-time primary care provider at Amberwell Atchison. He returned to Kansas after completing his residency in family medicine at North Colorado Family Medicine, where he received extensive training in obstetrics. Dr. Darland focuses on patient-centered care and sees his role as that of a guide to his patients. He works closely with them to figure out a plan that will work best for their lifestyles and health goals. He provides care for whole families, from pregnancy to end-of-life care.  

On choosing to go into the medical field… 

Dr. Darland first became interested in pursuing medicine while attending Bishop Carroll Catholic High School in Wichita where he participated in the Health Academy. The program allowed students to spend half the school day in the hospital shadowing nurses and doctors. Working with the doctors and seeing how they helped people everyday sparked his interest in the medical field. 

“When I was an undergrad at KU,” said Dr. Darland, “I had the opportunity to shadow primary care doctors and see the relationships they had with their patients. The doctors had known many of their patients for twenty or thirty years. That’s what I want to do. I want to deliver babies, and then, one day, deliver the babies of patients that I delivered. I want to provide care for whole families and get to know their entire family dynamic.”  

On being patient-centered… 

Amberwell Health focuses on patient-centered care. We ask each of our providers to tell us what being patient-centered means to them personally. 

 “I love patient-centered care,” Dr. Darland said. “I don’t see my role as telling my patients ‘this is what we’re going to do, and that’s that.’ My job is to guide them. I realize that my priorities for their health may not be the same as their priorities for their health. I let them know my recommendations but work with them to figure out what they’re willing to do. I give them options whenever I can, and then let them choose. I’m very much about meeting my patients where they are and trying to bring them to where they need to be, while respecting their autonomy and that they are in charge of their own healthcare.”  

Educational Background 

Dr. Darland performed his residency at North Colorado Family Medicine in Greeley, Colorado. While there, he completed the Advanced Maternity Care Track, which provided extensive training in obstetrics. During his residency, he served as supervising resident on inpatient adult medicine, inpatient pediatrics, and obstetrics. He was elected to serve as Administrative Chief Resident during his final year of residency. Dr. Darland received his medical degree from the University of Kansas, where he was a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society, a national honor society that honors medical students, residents, physicians, and other leaders recognized for their excellence in clinical care, leadership, compassion, and dedication to service. He earned his bachelor of science degree in Cellular Biology, also from KU, where he graduated with distinction. He attended Bishop Carroll Catholic High School in Wichita.  

About Dr. Darland 

Dr. Darland was born and raised in Wichita, Kansas. He was the first in his family to attend college and the first to pursue a career in medicine. He and his wife enjoy serving and being involved in the community. Dr. Darland has volunteered at the Lord’s diner in Wichita, a dining facility that provides a free meal once a day to the homeless population, and Meals on Wheels. His wife volunteered at the Hospitality House in Greeley, Colorado, an outreach supported by the North Colorado Medical Center that offers affordable overnight accommodations for families visiting loved ones in the hospital. 

In their spare time, they love being outdoors. Dr. Darland gardens and does yard work and usually has various outdoor projects he’s working on. Laura enjoys baking, cooking, and playing the piano. They try to visit as many national parks as possible. Their goal is to eventually live on a bit of land and maybe have some alpacas.
