Healthcare Foodservice Workers Week

Amberwell Health Staff Writer

Everyday, our dietary services team members work hard to provide meals to patients, staff, and guests at Amberwell Atchison, yet most of their work is done behind the scenes. They’re often learning new and efficient ways to create nutritious meals. They provide catering for events within the hospital and maintain high standards of cleanliness in the kitchen and the cafeteria. Amberwell Health dietary services team members are an essential part of our healthcare system. 

Impact on Patient Care

Our dietary services team members have a major impact on patient care by providing meals for patients that adhere to individual dietary needs. These specific meals help aid in patient recovery and provide strength and nourishment. The team also has unique opportunities to interact with guests who come to the hospital to visit their loved ones. They’re able to greet them with a smile and comfort them with an encouraging word, a snack, or a hot cup of coffee. These are small gestures that make a huge difference.

On incorporating new menu options...

“We are working on new menu ideas for our patients,” said Sue Convery, Director of Dietary Services, “trying to get away from frozen foods, and bringing in more fresh produce, meats, and seafood. Also coming up with new ways to feed staff members, such as cooked-to-order items, new flat bread pizzas, and new wraps and sandwiches.”

Sue Convery, Director of Dietary Services

Sue has been serving as the Director of Dietary Services at Amberwell Atchison since March of 2020. She manages the kitchen, makes schedules, creates menus, and does all of the ordering. She also gets to make the flatbread pizzas, her favorite part of the day.

On choosing Amberwell Atchison…

Sue chose to serve at Amberwell Atchison because when she had a health scare and came here for treatment, she received exceptional care. She was treated with dignity and respect. “It was a very scary time for me,” said Sue, “but the genuine care and kindness I received here eased my mind and made me feel safe.”

In her spare time…

In her spare time, Sue enjoys working out, cooking, outdoor projects, and woodworking. 

She has four sons, ages 26, 27, 30, and 35, and one granddaughter, who is the love of her life.
