The Amberwell pharmacy services team plays an integral role in patient care. The pharmacy team serves nearly every department of our organization, including our Horton, Troy, and Leavenworth clinics as well as external providers within our community such as dentists, ophthalmologists, EMS, and other medical offices. They strive to provide the highest quality of care to our patients and thrive on strong team collaboration to ensure patient success.
Impact on Patient Experience
The pharmacy impacts our patients’ care by helping the patients understand how to take their medications correctly and safely. They visit with inpatients and explain what new medications they are receiving, why they need them, and the possible side effects. This interaction comforts patients and helps allay fears, creating a positive impact on patient experience.

Roles and Responsibilities
Amberwell pharmacists make sure patient medication lists are up to date, visit with patients about current and new medications that may be started in the hospital, and answer any questions or concerns patients may have. During a patient’s stay, the pharmacists manage medication dosing, monitor kidney function and pertinent labs, as well as provide recommendations to the hospitalist for medication selection.
Our technicians work hard everyday to keep the Omnicell machines full of needed medications. They monitor medications in the facility’s crash carts and also prepare IV admixtures daily for inpatients, the emergency department, obstetrics, and outpatient infusion.
Our pharmacy buyer monitors inventory and keeps our medication ordering practices within the guidelines of our group purchasing organization contract. She also takes care of the 340B program and works diligently to keep us in compliance with HRSA.
Behind the scenes, the pharmacy monitors medication documentation, charging, and out-dates as well as keeps our drug dictionary up-to-date. They monitor yearly influenza trends and vaccine usage to help prepare our facility each year.
Our pharmacy also collaborates with KU and participates in precepting pharmacy students throughout the year. These students bring fresh ideas and new perspectives that we can integrate into our current processes to ensure we are staying up-to-date with medication practices.
Thank you to our pharmacy services team for all that they do!
