Utilization Review/Case Manager Cheryl VanWey, BSN RN, plays a vital role at Amberwell Atchison. Case managers act as advocates, educators, coordinators, facilitators, navigators, and resource managers to help patients understand and manage their condition, find and gain access to services, and obtain high-quality, cost-effective care.
Impact on Patient Care
In her role, Cheryl collaborates with other members of the multidisciplinary team to oversee the care of every patient admitted to Amberwell Atchison. She rounds daily with the members of the team, and each of them is involved with every patient from admission until discharge. “When a person is ill and is admitted to the hospital,” said Cheryl, “it is a very difficult time for them. Because of this, the members of the team and I assist in developing a treatment and discharge plan designed for each patient throughout their hospital stay.” Cheryl works closely with Manager of Social Services Aggie Asher to ensure smooth transitions through each level of a patient’s care until the patient is discharged.
The Multidisciplinary Team
Cheryl feels that one of the advantages of receiving care as an inpatient at Amberwell Atchison is its great multidisciplinary team. The team consists of a hospitalist, social worker, physical and occupational therapists, a registered dietitian, nurses, pharmacists, and the case manager addressing all areas and healthcare needs for our patients throughout their stay at Amberwell Atchison.
Utilization Review
Cheryl also works in the utilization review role, which is the financial side of healthcare. She helps in assisting and developing an appropriate treatment plan that consists of precertification, continued stay, and length of stay reviews along with transitions of care for all levels and areas of admissions.
