We are excited to welcome our first student registered nurse anesthetist (SRNA), Trevor Mason, to learn from our anesthesia team at Amberwell Atchison. Trevor joins Amberwell Health as a part of the University of Kansas Nurse Anesthesia Education Program. Amberwell Atchison obtained approval as a clinical affiliate site for the University of Kansas Nurse Anesthesia Education Department in December 2020. Amberwell Atchison is one of 24 clinical affiliate training sites for the 108 SRNAs enrolled in the nurse anesthetist program at the University of Kansas.
Amberwell’s David Hart, DNP, CRNA, NSPM-C, and Micah Reece, DNP, CRNA, have extensive experience teaching student nurse anesthetists in the KU program at other clinical affiliate sites and worked with the education department at KU to get the location approved for students. In addition to Hart and Reece, students will also be taught and mentored by Darin Allen, MD, and Rebecca Boust, MSNA, APRN, CRNA, who are also anesthesia providers at Amberwell Atchison.
The chair of the Department of Nurse Anesthesia Education, Donna Nyght, was enthusiastic about the addition of the Atchison location. “I literally jumped at the chance to send students to Amberwell Atchison,” she said, “knowing they would have great clinical instructors and fantastic learning opportunities.”
The KU Nurse Anesthesia Education Department takes great pride in educating exemplary SRNAs and emphasizing the role of independent practice in communities such as Atchison. Students that enroll in this program earn a Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice degree after completing three years of a rigorous curriculum. Many recent graduates of the program have gone on to serve throughout the state of Kansas, including Ottawa, Arkansas City, Salina, Hays, Junction City, Manhattan, Lawrence, Wichita, and metro Kansas City.
