Parkinson’s Therapy
The answer for better movement and improved quality of life
What is LSVT BIG?
LSVT BIG is a research-based exercise program designed to assist in forming strategies to override the motor and non-motor effects of Parkinson’s Disease using principles of neuroplasticity and motor learning.
The program focuses on “bigness” and repetition in gestures and movements to get the patient to recognize the amount of effort required to produce “normal” movements used in daily living.
What to expect from LSVT BIG
- Improved gait stability
- Increased trunk rotation
- Better posture
- Improved balance
- Faster walking with bigger steps
- Fewer falls
- Improved quality of life
The mantra of the LSVT program is “Think Big.”
LSVT BIG treatment is proven to help patients retrain their brains and slow down the effects of Parkinson’s Disease and other neurological disorders.
How the program works
LSVT BIG sessions can only be taught by therapists who are LSVT BIG certified.
- 16 sessions
- 4 consecutive weeks
- 4 consecutive days per week
- 1 hour for each session
Daily homework practice and carryover exercises reinforce what you’re learning during your sessions and to retrain your brain to “Think Big.”
Since this program is highly intensive, it works best for patients who are committed to doing the work and have a family support system to help them complete their daily exercises and reinforce the concepts at home.
1
The first part of each session consists of seven exercises that every patient in the program practices during each of their sessions. The intensity of these exercises is based on the severity of the patient’s condition. The intensity increases as the patient shows progress.
2
The second part of each session focuses on functional components that the patient may struggle with such as going from sitting to standing or walking through doorways.
3
The last part of each session focuses on a complex, multi-step task that the patient has identified as a problem area such as shopping or going to the movies.
Start as soon as symptoms begin
It’s best that patients learn LSVT BIG as soon as possible following a diagnosis of Parkinson’s or when they notice an adverse change in their movements. Patients will be able to use the program as a tool to help them keep moving and stay active in their lives for as long as possible.
