This year for Skilled Nursing Care Week, we wanted to highlight our swing bed program because it incorporates 24-hour skilled nursing care for post-acute patients in need of short-term rehabilitation before returning home. Swing bed is an intensive program designed to help Medicare patients who no longer require acute hospital care continue to recover under the supervision of Amberwell Atchison’s professional care team. The program saves patients from having to temporarily relocate to a nursing home for recovery by allowing them to stay and recover right here at Amberwell Atchison.
For Those Who Need Extra Time to Recover
Following a hospital stay, some patients lack the strength or ability to return to their normal lives and everyday activities right away. They need a little extra time to recover from surgery, illness, or injury. Swing bed is a transitional program that combines skilled nursing care with physical, occupational, and speech therapies, dietary services, and an activity program to help streamline recovery and increase independence so that patients can return home or to other living arrangements safely and confidently.
The “swing” in swing bed represents how the program swings according to the level of care a patient needs. An eligible patient for the swing bed program has had an inpatient, acute-care stay of at least three days within the last thirty days and is not yet recovered enough to return home. Instead, they “swing” from acute care services to skilled nursing services, and then back home once they are ready.
Recover Close-to-Home
An individual may still qualify for Amberwell Atchison’s swing bed program even if they were originally hospitalized in a facility other than Amberwell Atchison. This allows the patient to recover close to home near family and friends. This convenience saves the patient’s loved ones the time and money it would cost to visit the patient while he or she is in recovery.
If a patient does return home after their hospital stay and realizes that they returned home before they were ready, they may still be able to enter Amberwell Atchison’s swing bed program until they make a more complete recovery.
