Our History

1914 – In July 1914, the first hospital facility on Second Street in Atchison was opened and the first patient was admitted. The facility included 14 single rooms, 4 four-bed wards, two complete operating rooms, a sterilization room, a modern laboratory, and one of the finest X-ray rooms in the West. The hospital building was renovated and expanded several times between 1940 and 1962 and a $2.5 million renovation remodeling program was completed in 1990.

2010 – In order to remain a leader in area healthcare, a new, state-of-the-art location at 800 Raven Hill Drive was opened in January 2010. The single-story, 85,000 square foot building allows outpatient, clinic, and inpatient care teams to be in close proximity. The core structure of the original hospital building was imploded in August 2010 and the remaining buildings and land were donated to Benedictine College.

2020 – In October of 2020, the Atchison Hospital location rebranded as Amberwell Atchison and associated outlying clinics were renamed to jointly be known as the Amberwell Health Atchison organization.

Amberwell Health Atchison became a founding member of the rural healthcare system, Amberwell Health, that allows affiliated organizations to take advantage of the positive aspects of a collaborative healthcare system while staying true to the vital role they play in their local communities.

2021 – In January 2021, primary care providers John Growney, MD and James Growney, PA joined Amberwell Health Atchison, and the clinic location was rebranded as Amberwell Eighth Street Clinic.

In March 2021, Hiawatha Community Hospital and the associated clinic in Highland, KS affiliated with Amberwell Health as Amberwell Health Hiawatha, which provided the opportunity for economies of scale, expense sharing, and enhanced care coordination.

2023 – Amberwell Lansing Clinic was opened as the fourth outlying clinic location, offering primary care, general surgery and orthopedic clinic services, pain management, and occupational health services.
