Amberwell Atchison Clinical Director of Anesthesia, David W. Hart, has been announced as one of the principal authors of a pivotal article, Factors Affecting Nurse Anesthetists’ Transition from Clinical Practice to Academia: A Scoping Review, published in the December 2024 edition of the AANA Journal. Hart, who also serves as adjunct faculty at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) and the University of South Florida’s Advanced Pain Management Fellowship, contributed to a comprehensive scoping review that examines gaps in educator training strategies within nurse anesthesia.
The review analyzed 733 articles published between 2014 and May 2023, focusing primarily on mentorship (82%), orientation (47%), work-life balance (41%), early identification and empowerment (18%), formal pedagogical training (41%), faculty compensation (29%), and alternative faculty positions (23%). While robust educator strategies (teach the teacher) were identified for undergraduate nursing, nurse practitioners, and midwifery, the findings highlighted a notable lack of tailored approaches for nurse anesthetists.
Hart’s work underscores the need for advancing faculty development and support within the field of nurse anesthesia. This contribution is expected to inform future educational frameworks and promote enhanced mentorship and faculty engagement strategies within the specialty. Phase 2 of this research involving a focus group has already begun with a grant awarded from the AANA.
