At their annual summer barbecue, the Amberwell Atchison Volunteers named Jeanne Durkin this year’s Volunteer of the Year. It’s a recognition that, according to Karen Falk, volunteer coordinator at Amberwell Atchison, has been long overdue. “Jeanne has been treasurer for the Amberwell Atchison Volunteers for almost eight years,” said Karen. “She does so much to keep the group going!”
The group also recognized several members for their years of service, with recipients ranging from five years of service all the way up to sixty-five years! Joyce Brown, who was recognized for sixty-five years of service this year, is an original member of the organization, which began in 1957.
Award recipients are pictured above as follows:
Front Row (L to R) – Joyce Brown, 65 years; Julia Clem, 15 years; Roberta Wolters, 45 years.
Back Row (L to R) – Al Wohletz, 10 years; Louise Winters, 10 years; Linda Buttron, 20 years; Sharon Page Westhoff, 20 years; Marcella Smith, 5 years; Jeanne Durkin, Volunteer of the Year.
Volunteering at Amberwell Atchison has been a community tradition since 1957. Our volunteers are an amazing group of individuals who devote thousands of hours each year to Amberwell by volunteering in the Sunflower Gift Shop, the Twice Is Nice Thrift Shop, mail delivery, information desk, surgery hospitality, arts and crafts, and fundraising activities. One of their major fundraising events is an annual golf tournament. The proceeds from the tournament are used to purchase medical equipment for Amberwell and provide scholarships for area students interested in pursuing a career in the medical field.
