Amberwell Nurse Shares Her Personal Experience as a Patient at Amberwell Hiawatha

At Amberwell, we’re proud of the care our teams provide. We hear stories from patients every day who describe the compassion, professionalism, and attention they receive from our staff. When that praise comes from one of our own team members, it takes on an even deeper meaning. 

A nurse from our labor and delivery unit recently became a patient herself. Her birth story included an unexpected induction, a postpartum complication, and a hospital readmission for both her and her newborn son. She chose to share her full experience—not just as a nurse, but as someone who placed her complete trust in the people she works alongside. 

Her words speak for themselves: 

“Working in a labor and delivery unit, you see all different types of births—planned, unplanned, fast, slow, complicated, uncomplicated. But when your own delivery and postpartum experience gets quickly turned upside down, personal nursing knowledge goes out the window. 

When told at my 37-week appointment I would need to be induced that day, many thoughts raced through my head—it’s too soon, I have too much to do—but I never had the thought that I (or my baby) wouldn’t be completely and totally cared for, and more importantly, safe. That’s because of the nurses and providers at Amberwell Hiawatha. My birthing experience, while sooner than I wanted, was everything I wanted and more. 

Then, when I quickly became pre-eclamptic after delivery, I knew that I would be the safest returning to Amberwell Hiawatha. Being on the patient side of healthcare can make you feel vulnerable and unsure of what to expect, but the outstanding care that I immediately received gave me a sense of calm due to the utmost trust I could place in my care team. 

My son and myself were readmitted to the hospital after birth for an additional four days and not once did I wish or wonder if I should be transferred to a ‘higher level of care.’ I knew I was receiving the finest care possible from people who truly cared about me and my family. 

While I hope my next delivery comes with much more peace and fewer complications, I know there is nowhere else I plan to receive OUTSTANDING care for prenatal, labor, delivery, postpartum, and beyond.” 

We are grateful for her willingness to share this story—and proud that she trusted Amberwell Hiawatha to care for her and her family.
