Amberwell is excited to welcome Brian R. Duncan, MD, to our Orthopedic Care team. Dr. Duncan is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon providing orthopedic services at Amberwell Atchison and Amberwell Hiawatha. Prior to joining Amberwell Health, Dr. Duncan practiced orthopedic surgery in St. Joseph, Missouri, for ten years. He has also served as the chief of orthopedic surgery at Kansas City VA Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri, and was a professor of orthopedic surgery at University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas.
Dr. Duncan offers a wide range of treatments for chronic and acute orthopedic injuries and conditions. His specialties include elbow, hand, shoulder, wrist, ankle, foot, hip, knee, pediatric orthopedics, and sports medicine. He routinely performs rotator cuff repair, cubital and carpal tunnel release, tendon repair and tendon transfer, ACL reconstruction, total knee replacement, total hip replacement, and anterior hip replacement.
Dr. Duncan is looking forward to serving in Amberwell communities. “I chose Amberwell because I want to serve in communities where patients are more than just numbers,” said Dr. Duncan. “I enjoy interacting with my patients–getting to know them, taking care of them, seeing them get better. I’m from a small town myself, and so it’s important to me to foster those relationships.”
Patient-centered care is the focus of Dr. Duncan’s practice. “Patient-centered care is everything,” he said. “It’s why we’re here. It’s about taking care of the patient and giving them the time they deserve. It’s about being respectful and understanding of what the patient is going through, meeting their needs, and doing it with empathy. I try to understand the circumstances that a patient is dealing with and use that to shape their plan.”
After graduating from Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas, Dr. Duncan earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee. He went on to perform his residency in orthopedic surgery at University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.
Dr. Duncan and his wife have two teenage children. In addition to caring for patients, Dr. Duncan enjoys hunting, fishing, and other outdoor activities.
