Shirley Eckert is retiring after over thirty-two years of service at Amberwell Atchison. Shirley began her career with Amberwell on October 8, 1990, as an admitting clerk, working on an as needed basis. Then, she joined the admitting team full-time and later transferred to the surgery department as the unit secretary.
“I have worked in many departments of the hospital and each one has brought a new learning experience,” said Shirley. “The physicians and the anesthesia providers I have worked with have been topnotch, and I will miss the interaction. I have seen many come and go over the years, and I am very proud to have known them and learned from them.”
One of Shirley’s favorite memories from working at Amberwell is having been a part of the move from the old hospital on Second Street to the new building on Raven Hill Drive and how exciting that was.
In her retirement, Shirley looks forward to sleeping until 8am and not having to drive into the sun in the morning and afternoon. She plans to use her camper more often and enjoy her grandchildren’s sporting events and school programs. She and her husband also plan to follow the college basketball team that her daughter coaches. “I have many crafts I plan to do and many more I would like to explore,” Shirley added, “but I think the best part about retirement will be having more time to keep the laundry done and the kitchen clean!”
Thank you, Shirley, for your many years of service to Amberwell. You will be greatly missed. Best wishes in your retirement years.
