We would like to welcome nurse practitioner Janae Nilges, FNP-C as she transitions from serving in the emergency department at Amberwell Hiawatha to providing Primary Care at Amberwell Hiawatha. Janae is a well-rounded healthcare provider with several years’ experience caring for patients in labor and delivery, inpatient and outpatient services, and emergency room settings. She enjoys serving in the close-knit community of Hiawatha and its surrounding areas.
From an early age, Janae knew that she wanted to go into the healthcare field. “I have always wanted to help people and make a difference,” said Janae. “I began my healthcare career as a CNA while going to school to become an RN. During my time as an RN, I worked in a family practice clinic and was able to see, firsthand, how much of an impact healthcare providers could have on their patients’ overall health. I saw how the relationships the providers developed with their patients were special and important. It was then that I decided to go back to school to become a family nurse practitioner so that I could have a greater impact on the overall health of my patients.”
Janae chose Amberwell because of the services they provide to smaller communities. “I grew up in a small town,” said Janae, “and I worked at a community hospital as an RN for seven years. During that time, I developed a love for working with patients with a variety of medical conditions as well as the small town feel that community hospitals provide. Being able to develop relationships with my patients while providing them with quality healthcare is why I am most excited about serving at Amberwell Hiawatha.”
Janae focuses on providing patient-centered care to all of her patients. “Being patient-centered involves teamwork between the healthcare provider, the patient, and, often, the patient’s family members to determine a plan of care that everyone is comfortable with and agreeable to,” said Janae. “It involves listening to the patient and involving them in the decision-making process in collaboration with the expertise from the provider.”
Janae lives in Whiting, Kansas, with her husband and young daughter. They have three dogs and a few chickens and ducks. In addition to caring for patients, Janae enjoys spending time with her family—being outdoors, taking their boat to the lake, riding their Honda Pioneer in the creek, and going to sporting events.
