Rebecca Boust, CRNA, MSNA, APRN, has been serving as a nurse anesthetist on the surgical team of Atchison Hospital & Clinics on a part-time basis since 2018 and has recently joined our team full-time. Rebecca has been a nurse for twenty-two years and a CRNA for nine years. She’s had extensive anesthesia experience in a Level 1 trauma center serving five states, ambulatory surgery centers, and a surgical suite for rural hospitals. Her expertise and experience make her a great asset to our organization.
On being patient-centered…
At Atchison Hospital & Clinics, we focus on patient-centered care. We ask each of our providers to tell us what being patient-centered means to them personally.
“To me, being patient-centered means involving patients in making their individualized anesthesia plans,” said Rebecca. “I calculate what I think will work best, then talk to the patient and their family to make changes based upon individual needs. We talk through all the parts of the plan together. I answer any questions the patient may have, and then we agree on our final steps. I want to make my patients feel as comfortable and confident in their anesthesia as I possibly can before they go to sleep. They know I’ll be there watching the whole time and will do everything I can to get them safely through the procedure.”
On choosing Atchison Hospital & Clinics…
Rebecca chose to serve at Atchison Hospital & Clinics because “it is a very collegial environment between staff, patients, and community members. There is a nice mix of cases and the anesthesia department is very forward thinking.”
Her inspiration to become a CRNA
Rebecca was influenced to go into the nursing field by her family, which is full of nurses. While in nursing school, she really connected with the operating room environment. As soon as she could, she took a nursing job in the OR and learned as much as possible, eventually specializing in cardiothoracic surgery. It was in this environment that Rebecca decided that she wanted to be like the cardiovascular operating room CRNAs with whom she worked. She then transferred to a high acuity trauma/transplant ICU for her critical care experience before pursuing her anesthesia graduate school training.
About Rebecca
Rebecca has a 20-month-old daughter who keeps her extraordinarily busy! Rebecca and her mother both love to decorate, and they have fun taking the baby shopping with them in the West Bottoms. Rebecca is also very close with her brother and his two kids.
Rebecca enjoys volunteering with her state and national professional associations and various disaster preparedness associations that she worked with when she was an ICU nurse. She once participated in a surgical mission trip to the Dominican Republic, which was life changing.
In her down time, Rebecca indulges her passion for travel. She’s had a wide range of travel experiences that include hiking to Machu Picchu, exploring New England, Canada, and the Pacific Northwest, and lying on the beach in Mexico. She’d love to see New Zealand and Australia next.
We are grateful Rebecca has chosen to practice with Atchison Hospital & Clinics.
