The rehabilitation services staff at Amberwell Atchison provide much needed support to patients recovering from chronic disease, sudden illness, traumatic incidents, and surgical procedures. Amberwell offers a range of inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, cardiac/pulmonary rehab services, speech therapy, and sports medicine. Our highly skilled therapists are not only dedicated to developing the best possible treatment plan for each patient’s individual needs, but they are also always looking for ways to expand their services and elevate their level of care. This has been another busy and productive year for our rehab services teams.
Parkinson’s Therapy Program
Mariah Henning, DPT, and Madison Martin, PTA, became certified to teach the LSVT-BIG® Program, a research-based exercise program designed to help patients with Parkinson’s Disease gain independence and confidence to continue to do activities they love and improve their overall quality of life. The exercises taught in the program help the patient to form strategies to override the motor and non-motor effects of Parkinson’s Disease using principles of neuroplasticity and motor learning. Through the LSVT-BIG Program, they’ve been able to help several patients improve in areas where persons with PD usually struggle, such as gait stability, falling, trunk rotation, posture, balance, and walking speed.

Physical Therapy for Women’s Health Issues
Margo Chartier, DPT, has begun offering physical therapy as a treatment option for women’s health issues like urinary incontinence and pelvic-floor dysfunction. Urinary incontinence is uncontrolled leakage of urine. Pelvic-floor dysfunction hinders one’s ability to correctly relax and coordinate the muscles of the pelvic floor in order to urinate or have a bowel movement. These common conditions can be caused by one’s daily habits, or they could be an effect of an underlying medical condition or physical problem. Physical therapy is a conservative treatment option that can help patients gain control over the uncomfortable and often embarrassing symptoms of these conditions.
Total Shoulder Replacement Therapy
The physical therapy team at Amberwell Atchison added total shoulder therapy to their list of treatment options for patients who have received a total shoulder replacement performed by Amberwell orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Shannon Carpenter. Dr. Carpenter, a fellowship-trained shoulder and elbow specialist, joined the orthopedic surgery team at Amberwell Atchison a little over a year ago. Prior to her joining the team, the physical therapy team had already been treating patients who receive total hip replacements or total knee replacements, two procedures commonly performed by Amberwell orthopedic surgeons.
