Dr. Bryon Bigham has been practicing medicine for over twenty years as a full-spectrum primary care physician in Hiawatha, Kansas. He cares for patients of all ages, from infants to geriatrics. In addition to being a primary care provider at Amberwell Hiawatha, Dr. Bigham developed and teaches a diabetes education class accredited by the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE). He is also the medical director for the Northeast Kansas Home Health and Hospice. He is currently serving as chief of staff at Amberwell Hiawatha.
“I chose Amberwell Hiawatha because I wanted to serve in a small-town setting where I had the opportunity to care for families during all stages of life, from pediatrics to geriatrics,” said Dr. Bigham. “I also enjoy caring for patients with a wide range of health conditions, including ambulatory care, chronic disease, inpatient care, emergency care, obstetrics, and nursing home.”
“I chose to go into the medical field because I have always had a strong desire to help people,” said Dr. Bigham. “I’ve always loved science and thoroughly enjoy the challenge of helping people to get and stay well.”
Amberwell Health focuses on patient-centered care. We ask each of our providers to tell us what being patient-centered means to them personally.
“To me, patient-centered care is care that is respectful of each individual patient’s preferences, needs, and values,” said Dr. Bigham. “I work with my patients to decide the course of care that will best meet their needs and help them to reach their health goals.”
Dr. Bigham received his undergraduate degree from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. He then finished his medical degree at the University of Kansas in Kansas City, Kansas. He learned obstetrics from the obstetricians in Topeka at Family Medicine Residency. He has been serving in Hiawatha since 1997.
Dr. Bigham and his wife Denise raised their four children in Hiawatha. They have three grown sons working in Topeka, Kansas, and a daughter, who is a senior in high school. In addition to caring for patients, Dr. Bigham enjoys backpacking, jazz festivals, and golf.
