Joseph Asher, MD

Joseph Asher, MD, is a primary care physician at Amberwell Atchison. Dr. Asher provides care to patients of all ages and health conditions. He is a great communicator and easy for patients to talk to. One of his strengths is his ability to explain complex health issues to his patients so that they can make informed medical decisions in order to achieve their health goals.

On Returning to His Hometown…

Dr. Asher was born and raised in Atchison, Kansas. He left for twelve years to attend college in Ohio, medical school in Kansas City, and complete his residency in Texas. “I’m truly honored to have the opportunity to return to Atchison and give back to my home community,” said Dr. Asher. “While I was away, I’d see development taking place in Atchison from afar. When I visited my family during holidays, there’d always be exciting things happening downtown and new small businesses opening.

“In addition to exciting, new developments in Atchison, the location is great as well. With close proximity to the airport and downtown Kansas City, it is possible to experience big city amenities while still enjoying small town living.”

On Choosing Amberwell Atchison…

Dr. Asher has had personal ties to Amberwell Atchison his entire life. “My grandfather Jim Asher was the administrator at Amberwell Atchison for twenty-eight years, and my mother Aggie Asher has been a social worker for Amberwell Atchison for over thirty years,” said Dr. Asher.

A large part of what drew Dr. Asher to Amberwell was the overall vision of the organization. “I had heard about the growth happening at Amberwell and their vision for healthcare in rural Kansas, and when the opportunity presented itself, I was more than excited for a chance to join the team.”

On Becoming a Primary Care Physician…

“I chose to become a primary care physician because growing up in a small town, I saw how primary care providers were viewed as leaders in the community. They were always serving in the community and giving back,” said Dr. Asher, “and I was inspired by their example.”

About Dr. Asher

Dr. Asher is married and has a golden retriever named Sammy. In their spare time, he and his wife love being social in the community. They like trying new foods and visiting different bars and restaurants. They also enjoy spending time at home watching movies. Dr. Asher’s other hobbies include spending time outdoors, cooking, drinking coffee, playing golf, and watching the Chiefs and Royals play.
