Mariah Kriwiel, MD

Mariah Kriwiel, MD, is a primary care and maternal care physician at Amberwell Hiawatha. Her special interests include women’s health, maternal care, pediatrics, and preventive health. Dr. Kriwiel provides care for the whole family. Forming relationships with her patients is extremely important to her. “I want my patients to know that I’m here for them,” she said. “My job is to be a sounding board to help empower them to make their own decisions about their health. No matter what health issues they face, I will support their decisions and help them through it.”

On Choosing Ambewell Hiawatha…

Dr. Kriwiel chose Amberwell Hiawatha because the position available featured the aspects she was looking for—primary care and maternal care—and because of the Hiawatha community. “About two years before I accepted the position, my family and I visited Hiawatha and spent a whole weekend there. We met a lot of different people who went out of their way to make my family and I feel welcome. They showed us what a great community Hiawatha is, and that was a big draw for us because we were looking forward to being active in the community and having our children involved in sports and school.”

On Becoming a Primary Care Physician…

“I initially became interested in becoming a primary care physician after my grandpa was diagnosed with lung cancer when I was in high school,” said Dr. Kriwiel. “He and I were very close, and I would go with him to his medical appointments. He went to see a lot of different specialists, and they were good, but he had a genuinely close relationship with his primary care provider. He was able to be open and honest with him about his struggles, and the provider was great at breaking down complicated things and making them more understandable. He really made a difference in my grandpa’s journey, and I was inspired by that.”

About Dr. Kriwiel

Dr. Kriwiel is married and has three young children. Her husband Toby is a marriage and family therapist. They love to travel, try new restaurants, and explore new cities. They are always out and about looking for fun things to do. In her free time, Dr. Kriwiel enjoys participating in sports and going on hikes.
