Dr. Russell Grimes is a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon with over 20 years of experience treating a wide range of conditions that affect movement and comfort. He joins Amberwell with a practical, patient-first approach to care, offering both surgical and non-surgical options tailored to each individual.
Since 2006, Dr. Grimes has cared for patients throughout Saint Joseph and the Kansas City metro area. He now brings his expertise to the communities served by Amberwell.
Clinical Focus
Dr. Grimes provides care for many foot and ankle conditions, with treatment approaches that improve function and relieve discomfort. His care includes:
– Foot and ankle fractures
– Achilles tendon disorders
– Arthritis and degenerative joint issues
– Bunion and hammertoe correction
– Charcot foot reconstruction
– Sports injuries
– Diabetic foot complications
– Total ankle replacement
– Plantar fasciitis and heel pain
Treatment Philosophy
Although surgery is a key part of his practice, Dr. Grimes begins with conservative care whenever possible. He often starts with physical therapy, orthotics, or changes in activity before recommending surgery.
“Not every foot problem needs an operation,” he says. “I start by asking what will help this person move better and feel better, with the least risk.”
When surgery is needed, he clearly explains all available options—whether traditional or minimally invasive—and helps patients make confident decisions about their care.
Training and Professional Involvement
Dr. Grimes serves as a surgical instructor for the Truman Medical Center Lakewood Podiatric Residency Program, where he mentors future surgeons and stays current with evolving practices and technologies.
Background and Personal Interests
Before becoming a physician, Dr. Grimes played college football, an experience that shaped his understanding of how important mobility is to daily life. Today, he brings that same perspective to his care for patients of all ages and activity levels.
Dr. Grimes earned his undergraduate degree in Exercise Science and Biology from Missouri Western State College in Saint Joseph. He completed his Doctorate in Podiatric Medicine at Des Moines University and a three-year surgical residency at the Medical Center of Independence in Missouri. He is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and is licensed to practice in both Kansas and Missouri.
He and his wife, a pediatric nurse originally from Hiawatha, have four children. Outside of work, he enjoys sports, travel, and time with his family.
