What to Expect with a Colonoscopy

Request: You have 2 easy options to request a colonoscopy with Amberwell Surgical Care. You do not need a referral to have your colonoscopy with Amberwell Surgical Care.
  • Option 1: Complete the online request form.
  • Option 2: Call Amberwell Surgical Care:
    • Amberwell Atchison: 913-367-6682
    • Amberwell Hiawatha: 785-742-2131

Assessment Phone Call: Next, a nurse from Amberwell Surgical Care will call you to ask about your medical history and ensure you do not need a pre-op appointment prior to your procedure. The nurse will go over pre-op instructions and assign you a procedure date.

Prep: The nurse will review with you how to prepare your colon for your colonoscopy and explain what you can and cannot eat or drink before your procedure. Dr. Warren is available for Monday colonoscopies, allowing you to complete your prep over the weekend. This helps minimize disruption to your work and family schedules, making it more convenient to take care of your health.

During the Phone Call

  • Review of your medical history and any previous colonoscopies.
  • Discussion of your current medications and any allergies.
  • Review of your insurance details.
  • Scheduling your colonoscopy, typically at least two weeks in advance to allow time for prior authorization.
  • Preoperative education, including information on stopping certain medications if necessary.

What You Will Receive via Email or Mail

  • Detailed colon prep instructions.
  • Prescription for the colon prep (Sutab or Goyltyle).
  • Instructions on where and when to arrive on the day of the procedure.

On the Day of the Procedure

During the Procedure

Procedure Details:

Duration: Typically takes 30 to 60 minutes.

Comfortable Sedation: Anesthesia is provided to ensure a pain-free experience.

Polyp Removal: Abnormal growths, including polyps, can often be removed during the same procedure to prevent the development or spread of cancer.
