Diagnostic laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to examine the organs inside the abdomen. It’s done with a laparoscope, a thin tube with a camera, which is inserted through a small incision. This allows viewing of the abdominal and pelvic organs without making large incisions.
Why It’s Used
Diagnostic laparoscopy is used to:
- Help diagnose the cause of abdominal or pelvic pain.
- Examine tissue masses or organ abnormalities.
- Look for abnormal bleeding.
- Look for infection.
- Evaluate the extent of certain reproductive issues, such as endometriosis, fibroids, and pelvic inflammatory disease.
Benefits of Diagnostic Laparoscopy
The benefits of diagnostic laparoscopy are:
Minimally Invasive: Small incisions mean less pain and quicker recovery.
Accurate Diagnosis: Provides a clear view of the abdomen and pelvis, aiding in accurate diagnosis.
Quick Recovery: Most patients can go home the same day and return to normal activities sooner than with traditional surgery.
Reduced Risk of Complications: Smaller incisions reduce the risk of infection and complications.
What to Expect
Surgical Setting: Outpatient
Before: You’ll meet with Dr. Warren and his team to discuss the procedure. You may need to fast and avoid certain medications prior to having it done.
During: Performed under general anesthesia, one or more small incisions are made in the abdomen. The laparoscope and possibly other instruments are inserted to examine the organs.
After: Recovery time is short, with most people resuming normal activities within a few days. You may experience some discomfort, which can be managed with medication.
