A hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows a physician to look inside your uterus. This procedure is most commonly used to diagnose and treat causes of abnormal bleeding.
Other Uses for Hysteroscopies
In addition to diagnosing and treating causes of abnormal bleeding in the uterus, a hysteroscopy can also be used to:
- Identify and remove polyps and fibroids (non-cancerous growths in the uterus)
- Locate and remove adhesions (scar tissue)
- Congenital uterine anomalies (problems in the structure of the uterus that are present since birth)
Benefits of Having a Hysteroscopy
Opting for a hysteroscopy can offer several advantages:
- It’s minimally invasive.
- It involves no abdominal incisions.
- It’s the least invasive surgery for poly/fibroid removal.
- It can sometimes prevent the need for more extensive surgery.
- Recovery time is usually short.
- It allows for precise treatment of many uterine conditions.
What to Expect
Procedure Setting: Outpatient
Before: You’ll meet with Dr. Warren and his team to discuss the procedure. You might need to avoid eating or drinking for a short period before your appointment.
During: This procedure is done using anesthesia. A thin, lighted tube called a hysteroscope is inserted into the vagina, through the cervix, and into the uterus. Your doctor will fill the uterus with a liquid to get a clear view. The procedure is done in our operating room and typically takes less than an hour.
After: Recovery is generally quick. You may experience mild cramping or some spotting for a few days. Most people can return to their normal activities the next day.
