We have amazing physicians and nursing staff that take great pride in staying up to date on current obstetric and newborn standards of care. Our team is very proactive and takes advantage of any additional educational opportunities and certifications beyond the minimum requirements. In doing so, this enhances our knowledge and ensures we are providing the highest quality of care to our patients. Our Maternal Child Care Department achieved “Center of Excellence” designation by completing Vermont Oxford Network Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (VONNAS) training. This is a universal education program for birthing hospitals in Kansas for standardization of care in identification, evaluation, treatment and safe discharge of infants with NAS.
High 5 for Mother and Baby
Amberwell Hiawatha has recently implemented the High 5 program at our facility. This program promotes:
- Skin-to-skin right after birth
If you do desire, your baby will be placed on your chest right after birth so you and baby can bond. - Nothing but breast milk
Your baby will thrive on your milk and nothing else unless medically indicated. - “Rooming In”
Your baby may stay in your room (depending on delivery circumstances) so that you can learn your baby’s routine in regards to hunger cues. - No pacifiers or bottle nipples
Your baby needs to learn how to nurse at the breast without the interference or confusion of pacifiers or bottle nipples. - Breastfeeding resources
You will be given information for breastfeeding support in our community.

Breastfeeding Support
Amberwell Hiawatha’s breastfeeding support is free to the public and open to all moms who are breastfeeding, pumping or bottle feeding babies of all ages. Parents are encouraged to call if they have questions about breastfeeding, difficulty breastfeeding, want to see how much baby transfers in one feeding, or if they just want to see how much weight baby is gaining.

- Available 24-7 by appointment only
- Conducted by Certified Lactation Counselors
- All breastfeeding patients will receive follow up calls with a Certified Lactation Counselor for support and assistance, in addition to anticipatory guidance during crucial breastfeeding points.

Childbirth Education Class
FREE to all moms delivering at Amberwell Hiawatha.
Outside patients are welcomed for a $30 fee. Fathers or labor coaches welcome. Not limited to first pregnancy.

Car Seat Safety
Car seat checks and education are available during your hospital stay or by appointment with our child passenger safety technicians. This service is free to the public. Free seats are available to those who qualify. Call 785-742-6234 to schedule your appointment.
