What is dry needling?
Dry needling is a technique performed by specially trained physical therapists using a thin, sterile needle to treat muscles that hurt or feel tight. It is a safe method that helps relieve muscle pain and tightness.
How does dry needling work?
- The therapist identifies tight muscle spots known as trigger points.
- Trigger points can cause pain in the muscle itself or in other parts of your body.
- A thin needle is gently placed into these trigger points, causing the muscle to twitch. This twitching helps relax the muscle, reducing pain and improving your ability to move.
What happens during treatment?
- You might briefly feel some of your pain symptoms during the procedure.
- You may also experience mild soreness for a few days afterward.
- Following dry needling, your therapist will guide you through stretching and exercises. These activities help your muscles move better.
Who should NOT get dry needling?
You should avoid dry needling if you:
- Are pregnant
- Have previously experienced a collapsed lung (pneumothorax)
- Are taking blood-thinning medications
- Have a weakened immune system
- Have cognitive impairments (difficulties understanding or remembering)
Do I need a referral?
Yes, you need a referral to see a physical therapist for dry needling. The referral doesn’t need to specifically mention dry needling. The therapist will decide if dry needling is suitable for you after your evaluation.
Cost and Insurance Information
Most insurance plans do not cover dry needling. Amberwell charges $30 for treating 1-2 muscles, payable at the time of your visit.
