The Inpatient Care Unit specializes in caring for patients whose medical or surgical conditions require hospitalization and the expertise of physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals. The Inpatient Care Unit consists of 17 beds with private rooms. A team of highly skilled nurses, and hospitalists, a case manager, a social worker, and ancillary departments, work as a team with patients and families to assist with problem solving, discharge planning and to advocate for all areas of patient need. The staff at Amberwell Atchison strives to ensure that each patients’ emotional, physical, and spiritual needs are met. Patient treatment and care is individualized to meet unique needs.

Upon discharge, a highly skilled team consisting of a social worker, a respiratory therapist, and a case manager ensure that each patient has what they need to settle at home.
These needs may include but are not limited to:
- Home Health Services
- Oxygen therapy
- Meals on the wheels (if requested)
- Transportation
- Referrals to different community services
Swing Bed (SWB) Program
Intensive Care Unit (ICU):
Amberwell Atchison has a four-bed Intensive Care Unit that’s open 24/7 and is fully furnished with up-to-date monitoring equipment. Specialized care of adult critical patients is provided by highly trained critical care nurses.
The following critical care services are provided in the ICU:
- Advanced cardiac life support
- Monitoring heart rhythms through cardiac monitors
- Managing critical medication(s)
- Administering treatments (such as IV Insulin, IV cardiac medications, and medications used for sedation)
- Caring for patients on ventilators
- Caring for patients with sepsis
- Caring for diabetic crisis patients (including those suffering with diabetic ketoacidosis)
- Providing close monitoring of vital signs and lab values that aid providers in treatment selection
- Occasionally providing post-anesthesia recovery after hours
- Hemodynamic monitoring
- Caring for overdose and suicidal patients
